A place of our own
Over December Bob and I had been working hard (well, Bob mostly, I was more of a consultant!)) on clearing our new trout lake. We have had our own casting lakes for a while that we use for fly fishing lessons but we wanted somewhere we could take clients to catch some trout and this meant only a short drive down the road but sometimes the fishery can be busy and be an intimidating place for a beginner to learn to fly cast.
Now, we have somewhere that is a 20 second drive away or a few minutes walk if you don’t mind hills and don’t have to carry rods, nets and everything else we need for fly fishing!
The lake hasn’t really ever been fished although there are a few carp in there and we’ll need to net them soon. It has been a little choked by weeds and with it drained down we have set about it first with rakes, then with a hand scythe and then a long handled one. The rake was a waste of time but we managed to clear everything with the scythes and it looks pretty damn cool. We left the weeds on the bank overnight so that anything living in them can make its way back into the water. Even today we witnessed a pretty cool buzzer hatch and I saw plenty of corixa and tadpoles. Looks like there is a nice sized larder waiting for the new arrivals.
We have let the lake settledown for a bit now and will be stocking shortly with a mix of browns and rainbows that will be waiting to be caught by visitors to the Scott Fly Fishing School!
